Medicare Eligibility in Texas

The eligibility requirements are the same in Texas as in every other state. Most people become eligible for coverage when they turn 65. However, Medicare also provides coverage for Texas residents under 65 who are disabled. This includes those who have:

  • Been getting disability benefits for 24 months
  • ALS
  • End-stage renal disease

Medicare Advantage Plans in Texas

Medicare Advantage (Part C) in Texas gives you another way to get your Original Medicare benefits. There are PPOs, HMOs, MAPDs, and other types of plans available — which vary in cost and coverage.

According to healthinsurance.org, almost 43% of Texas Medicare beneficiaries had Medicare Advantage plans as of 2020. The availability depends on the county, ranging from 8 to as many as 60 plans (!!!) in some areas. So you may have a variety of programs to choose from depending on where you live in The Lone Star State.

Since some plans include networks of providers, it’s important to choose one that includes your doctor in the network. This will help you save on healthcare costs.

Medicare Supplement Plans in Texas

In Texas, 70 insurers offer Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans, and over 873,000 residents are enrolled. For those who don’t have supplemental coverage through Medicaid or an employer-sponsored plan, Medigap policies are intended to pay some or all of the out-of-pocket expenses that enrollees would normally have to pay on their own.

You must be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B to purchase a Medicare Supplement plan. Like many other states, Texas has put rules in place to make sure disabled Medicare recipients have some access to these plans.

Prescription Drug Plans in Texas

Medicare Parts A and B do NOT cover the cost of prescription drugs that you get from a pharmacy. If you’re on Medicare and don’t have drug coverage through Medicaid or an employer-sponsored plan, you’ll need to get Medicare Part D coverage.

In Texas, there are 35 stand-alone Medicare drug plans available, with premiums as low as $7 per month. Some plans cost as high as $155 per month, and that excludes some other costs like an annual deductible, plus copayments or coinsurance.

However, purchasing this coverage can save you hundreds of dollars out-of-pocket each year, because generally — the older you are, the more you pay for your medications.
